Identifying Local Opportunities

1.     Nassau County Investigating, Training In Wake Of Cyber Scam
This article is about the Nassau County’s Comptroller office facing $710,000 in charges because of fraudulent scammers. In October, an employee received an email that posed as their frequent vendor saying that their payment did not go through. The county is implementing an employee training program to recognize cybercriminals. The problem was that employees believed that the email looked legitimate and gave the cybercriminals hundreds and thousands of dollars. Employees were not given the proper training to know what a scam was or what was real. The county is facing this problem because it has greatly impacted their finances.

Curran to NHL: Let the Isles Play at Nassau Coliseum
The Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is writing to the NHL to try and move all of the Islanders 20-21 season to the Coliseum. Right now, they are splitting their home games between Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. She wrote to the NHL that the fans and the players want the games at the Coliseum. Recent evidence shows that the players perform better and they have more wins when playing there too. The problem is that based on their contract, the Islanders are supposed to split their time between Barclays and the Coliseum but would rather only play at the Coliseum. The Islanders organization and their fans are experiencing this problem.

Man Charged With Sex Abuse Day After Release Under New Bail Law
This article is discussing a specific man who was arrested for public lewdness and criminal possession of a weapon. After sitting next to a woman on the train, he began masturbating on the train in front of this woman and in public. A few days later, he was arrested in New York City for another sexual incident. New York’s new bail law is playing a major role in this new year’s criminal cases. The new law states that there will no longer be a cost associated with bail. This means that criminals are able to walk the streets freely with no monetary value. New Yorker’s are extremely mad about this because repeat offenders are becoming more prevalent. There have been many different cases of people getting arrested, released under the bail law, and quickly arrested again. The problem is the new bail law. Nothing is being enforced because of the lack of monetary value associated with the bail. This makes it difficult to try and control harmful people on the streets. New York residents, and policeman are experiencing this problem because it is making their streets no longer as safe and their jobs more difficult.

  1. Hi, Rachel! I enjoyed reading the articles you picked for your blog post. Your analysis of each article was well-written and clearly answered each question. I related to your first article because, in my post, I analyzed an article where the St. Lucie County Parks and Recreation Department recently experienced a malware attack. In these situations, the problem affects not only the employees and organizations, but also the counties as a whole. Overall, great job!

  2. Rachel,

Interesting articles. I especially enjoyed the one about the phishing attack. It is so easy to fall for one of this things as a normal person, but it's unnerving that a governmental agency is not using a more secure means to verify payment.

As far as the guy exposing himself, it would seem reasonable to change the law so that someone who does something like that is carefully monitored (ankle bracelet) to keep track of them.

  3. Hey Rachel,
That New York bail law is absolutely ridiculous. Not having to pay any bail and getting to walk the streets freely gives criminals this negative incentive to just go about and commit crimes. Not to mention, with all this money that they no longer acquire from bail, I think this might affect the salaries of law enforcement officials and cops? maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like that would maybe be a result of this happening. Not to mention I find it particularly frustrating that police officers now have more work and risk at their hands, when the criminal can just go and do it all over again.
