20A- Growing Your Social Capital

My product goes hand in hand with the airline industry and developing software for this product/service. During the coronavirus unfortunately right now, the airlines are extremely busy. I was unable to get in contact with anyone to do this assignment. I reached out via email last week to Maya Liebman who is the Chief Information Officer at American Airlines. I wasn’t expecting a response because of how busy she is now during this time.

Networking is extremely important in general, but especially when you want to start up a business. I have learned that who you know can really go a long way. I hope that in any future network events it could be in person or easier to reach via the phone or email. Calling any airline right now to talk about a business idea you may have would probably not go so well.

19A - Idea Napkin No. 2

You: I am a junior at the University of Florida studying finance. I am from Long Island, New York. I enjoy traveling, skiing and trying new foods. Some of my skills include being proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I consider myself to be very good with computers and able to pick up technology very easily. I am very interested in the entertainment industry and this past summer I interned at AMC Networks in the finance department for AMC and Sundance. There, I was able to use my analytical, Excel, and organizational skills to further develop my passion for the entertainment industry. If I were to start this business, I think that it would start out as a part time side job which would eventually turn into a full-time job. I would develop a software for the Bluetooth that would be compatible and safe for the in-flight entertainment and not interfere with the pilot’s signal.  Eventually I would sell it off to a different company or even try to start selling it to the airlines themselves. I think that my idea is there, and many people experience the same problem as I do.

What are you offering to customers? I am offering an easy way to connect Bluetooth devices to airplanes. Since not all passengers may want this service, it can be an opt in type of program. If the passenger wants to be able to connect to the Bluetooth, that service can be offered to them for $1.99-$3.00 for the entirety of the plane ride. I don’t know the exact pricing yet.  I think that the opt in service is better than making it available to everyone so that the Bluetooth signals are a lot lower. 100% of the plane would not be using the Bluetooth so it would be a lot safer. My invention will make it so that travelers will never have to worry again about owning and bringing a wired pair of headphones while traveling.

Who are you offering it to? At first, I was going to invent a device for consumers to purchase in the store such as best buy, target, etc. making it B2C. Now, I want to develop the program software and sell it to different airline companies for them to install it on all of their airplanes, B2B.

Why do they care? They care because it would increase their customer satisfaction. The airlines could set prices to make a profit on this service. They know that it is a known problem, and by people not using the personal entertainment, they are wasting money on contracts with entertainment companies that provide their content to the airlines. Having the Bluetooth opt in program available would increase their customer satisfaction, profits, and bring them into the future of technology.

What are your core competencies? My passion for both entertainment and traveling are to my benefit. I am able to understand how consumers want to travel while keeping a budget in mind. My detail-oriented mind will be of benefit when deciding key decisions for the business.

When evaluating all of these questions, I do think that they tie into each other in one way or another. Great computer skills will allow me to develop a software. Excel and business skills will allow me to keep track, organize, and analyze important business decisions. Selling to the airlines would be the best approach. The software development could be a very successful business and a great industry to enter because people will always want to travel, and the travel industry isn’t going anywhere.
While I didn’t get feedback on Idea Napkin No. 1, I did get feedback in general for my product. I read about the concern of the Bluetooth connectivity not being safe for the pilots and passengers. That is when I took into consideration for it to be an opt in service so that there are minimal connectivity signals, at least in the beginning. I think that over the year’s technology will allow the entire plane to be able to connect without their being any safety concerns. That was the only feedback I received for me to change anything. I changed this in the “Who are you offering it to” and “Why do they care” sections.

18A - Create a Customer Avatar

My avatar is a young woman in her 30s. She is a successful businesswoman and is constantly traveling. She often has to fly to conferences and meetings. She isn’t married yet, but she has a boyfriend who may turn into her fiancĂ© soon. My avatar loves to travel, be with her best girlfriends, run in the park, and go shopping whenever she has down time. She is extremely busy, so her weekends are her down time. Her favorite TV show is Friends and Criminal Minds. My avatar doesn’t have a car because she lives in New York City, but if she did have a car it would be a grey Audi.

I have a few things in common with the avatar but not much. I’m still in college and don’t have a full-time job. My favorite TV show is Friends, and I love to travel, hangout with my friends and go shopping. I hate running so we don’t have that in common. I love New York City, but I don’t live there. I think that our similarities are not a coincidence. I made up this virtual person myself, so the minor details in her life are similar to mine.

16A - What's your secret sauce?

Some things that make me unique are
1.     Independent- I don’t think that I’m very dependent on people. I know how to do things for myself and don’t need to rely on others.
2.     Integrity- I think that I am able to make smart decisions and really try my best in doing the right thing even if other people don’t do the right thing.
3.     Caring- I really care a lot for others and care so much for my friends and family. I feel that I am always ready to listen to my friends and ready to hear what they have to say. I’ve been told that I’m a good listener.
4.     Dedicated- I think that I am a very dedicated and hard worker. If something is important to me, it really shows, and I don’t give up easily.
5.     Go out of my way for people- for people that I care about, I will go above and beyond for them. I enjoy making people feel appreciated and happy so I like going out of my way for people even though it sometimes may not be returned.

My mom did this interview. My mom said that I’m very diligent, determined and ambitious. She said that I’ll do anything possible to get to the end goal.

My brother Daniel did this interview. He said that I’m strong willed and good at getting things when I need it. Not too sure what that means but it’s what he said.

One of my best friends Hallie did this interview. Hallie said that I’m very independent and have a great sense of direction.

One of my best friends Emily did this interview. She said that I’m very independent and really good at keeping conversations. She said I like making people feel comfortable and am very considerate of other people’s feelings.

My dad did this interview. He said that I have strong values and opinions of what is right and wrong. He said that I’m very hard working and know when I am prepared or not prepared.

There were some differences and similarities of mine vs. the interviewees answer. The things that I wrote in the beginning, I feel like I am told a lot that I have those qualities. I think that I possess those qualities, but I also think that me hearing it from other people over time has led me to believe that I have those qualities. Some qualities that my friends said that I have are a lot more specific than what I wrote. I think that the interviewees are correct about me. My family and best friends know me best. I wouldn’t change anything from part 1.

15A- Figuring out Buyer Behavior No. 2

Alternative evaluation.  Alex is from New York and has to fly to and from school. Lauren flies to Louisiana for school and is often on planes. Joanna is from Maryland and flies to UF. Since I am home right now, I called each person and interviewed them over the phone.

Alex didn’t have AirPods, but Lauren and Joanna do. Alex said that he uses his Best Studios headphones to plug into the monitor in front of him. Lauren has AirPods, but previously she just used the regular apple headphones. Now, she has to remember headphones herself and said that she doesn’t really get frustrated by this if she remembers her other headphones. Bluetooth would be nice she said but doesn’t feel like its truly necessary. Joanna has AirPods and usually remembers to bring wired headphones on the plane. Quality is important to them all over the price.

How/ where do they buy? Alex purchased these headphones in Best Buy in person at the store. He used a credit card to make this purchase a while ago. Joanna and Lauren purchased their AirPods in person at an apple store. Prior to their AirPods, they just used the free headphones that came with their phones.

Post purchase evaluation
This purchase was a good idea for Alex because the quality of the sound is great, and they have lasted him a while. He wants to soon invest in a pair of AirPods but is scared that the quality won’t be as good. He feels like Bluetooth isn’t necessary for him right now. Joanna and Lauren are very satisfied with their purchases. They don’t see any downfalls to it besides being on airplanes. This doesn’t affect how they feel about having their AirPods though. They still enjoy their product.

Within this segment, they are aware that they need to have wired headphones no matter what considering how often they fly. This segment flies more than the average student because they have to get to and from school by a flight. The quality of their headphones doesn’t really coincide with how they travel. They all agreed that since being on a plane is so little of their time, they don’t think too much into it.
